Triceps Tendon Injuries

What is the Triceps Tendon?
The triceps tendon attaches the triceps muscle to the back of the elbow at the olecranon. It allows for straightening the arm.
What is This Condition?
Partial tears: small portion of tendon is damaged
Complete tears: tendon pulls fully away from the bone
What are the Symptoms?
Sudden pain in the back of the elbow
Swelling and bruising after injury
Weakness or inability to straighten the elbow against resistance
Sometimes a gap can be felt above the elbow
What Causes It?
Sudden forceful extension or fall on an outstretched arm
Direct trauma to the elbow
Risk factors: steroid use, chronic tendon irritation
How is It Diagnosed?
Exam: weakness with elbow extension, palpable gap
MRI or ultrasound: confirm extent of tear
How is It Treated?
Non-surgical:
For partial tears: rest, NSAIDs, and gradual physical therapy
Surgical:
Repair of the tendon back to the bone for complete tears or in cases of partial tears that have failed non-surgical treatment
