Olecranon Bursitis

What is the Olecranon Bursa?


The olecranon bursa is a fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow that cushions and protects the bone.


What is This Condition?


Olecranon bursitis occurs when the bursa becomes irritated and inflamed, filling with extra fluid.


What are the Symptoms?


  • Swelling and a soft lump over the back of the elbow

  • Tenderness or pain with pressure or movement

  • Redness or warmth if infected

  • Limited motion if swelling is severe


What Causes It?


  • Repetitive leaning or pressure on the elbow

  • Trauma (direct blow)

  • Infection (septic bursitis)

  • Conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis


How is It Diagnosed?


  • Exam: visible swelling over the tip of the elbow

  • Aspiration: fluid can be tested if infection is suspected

  • X-rays: may show bone spurs or foreign bodies


How is It Treated?


Non-surgical:


  • Rest, compression, and padding to protect the elbow

  • NSAIDs for pain and swelling

  • Aspiration (draining the fluid)

  • Antibiotics if infected


Surgical:


  • Removal of the bursa in cases of repeated or severe bursitis
